How proximity shapes map rankings, and what actually extends your visible radius.
A common and demoralising discovery: you rank first in the map results when you search from the shop, and vanish entirely from two kilometres away.
Proximity is a ranking factor you cannot edit
Local results are personalised to where the searcher is standing. Distance between the searcher and your business is one of the strongest signals, which is why your own testing is always flattering and always misleading. Check rankings from different points on the map, not from your desk.
What actually widens the radius
Relevance and prominence are the parts you control. A complete profile with the correct primary category, accurate hours, real photographs, services listed, and a steady flow of recent reviews makes Google more willing to show you further out. So do consistent name, address and phone details across directories.
Content and links still count
Local rankings are not separate from the rest of SEO. A genuinely useful page about the service in that area, links from local organisations, and mentions in local press all extend visibility beyond walking distance.
Track rankings from a grid of points around your location rather than a single one. It is the only way to see whether the radius is actually growing.
