Custom ERP vs Off-the-Shelf

The choice is usually framed as cost versus fit. That is roughly right, but the timing of the costs is what actually decides which is the mistake.

Off-the-shelf is faster and cheaper to start

You get a proven system, an existing support ecosystem, and a live date measured in weeks. Where your processes are genuinely standard, adapting to the software's way of working is often an improvement rather than a compromise.

Custom pays off where you are actually different

Every business has two or three processes that are genuinely its own, and those are where packaged systems force expensive workarounds. Building around those processes removes the workarounds permanently and removes the per-user licence cost as you grow.

The heavily customised package is the worst outcome

Taking a packaged ERP and modifying it deeply combines the constraints of one approach with the cost of the other, and every vendor upgrade becomes a project. If you find yourself planning more than a handful of customisations, the decision has already been made for you.

Map your processes first, mark which are standard and which are genuinely differentiating, and let that ratio decide. A hybrid, with a package for finance and custom software for operations, is often the honest answer.
