Verifying real engagement and audience overlap before you pay for a collaboration.
Influencer spend goes wrong in a predictable way: a large follower count, a polished feed, and an audience with no reason to buy what you sell.
Check engagement quality, not rate
A healthy engagement rate can be manufactured. Read the comments. Generic praise and emoji from accounts with no posts is a bought audience. Real questions, specific replies and returning names are a real one. Ask for screenshots of audience location and age from the creator's own analytics.
Audience overlap matters more than size
A creator with fifteen thousand followers in your city, in your category, will usually outperform one with three hundred thousand spread across the country. Overlap with your existing customer profile is the variable that predicts conversions, and it is the one least often checked.
Structure the deal to be measurable
Unique discount codes and dedicated landing pages per creator turn a brand exercise into a measurable one. Agree deliverables, usage rights and posting windows in writing, and prefer a smaller paid test with two or three creators before committing a full budget to one.
Judge on cost per acquired customer, not cost per thousand views. The two rankings are frequently reversed.
